Name Change Procedures: Can I Change My Childs Last Name from My Maiden Name to My Married Name

I want to change my son's last name to my married name and I want to know if I can just file to have his last name changed on those grounds or if I would have to file for my husband to adopt him? We live in the state of KS and his biological father hasnt had or wanted any contact with him for the past 2 years (he is 3 and he has seen him 4 times in his first year of life) he is not on his birth certificate nor has he established paternity through the court or any other arrangements. My son's last name is currently my maiden name. Would I be able to change my son's last name to my married last name without the process of step-parent adoption?
