My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Washington
This just happened last night, I was driving in the dark and rain last night and was at a green light to turn left. However, I ended up turning into the opposite lane because I saw a completely empty lane with no cars and thought that was the lane for left turners but it turns out I was wrong. I immediately realized that I was going down on a road going in the opposite direction luckily there wasn't any cars. I immediately turned left into a area to get out of the road an officer however saw this and stopped me.
He asked for my driver license, insurance and vehicle registration. I provided him with my license and insurance card and an envelope that I believed to have my vehicle registration in it. However, once I gave him all of it I realized that the vehicle registration that WASN'T expired was still in my glove compartment, and the one I gave him was expired... but he already went back to his car so I couldn't give him my up to date vehicle registration paper. He came back and I tried to give him the correct vehicle registration paper but he didn't take it and said "oh it's fine you don't need to worry about that" or something like that.
He didn't give me a ticket on the spot, but told me that I will be receiving one in the mail for driving on the wrong side of the road and that I will have 15 days to respond. I have done some prior research to some cases like mine where drivers aren't issued a ticket on the spot and were told that they would get one sent in the mail; and ultimately from what I've read they never received a ticket. This made me think that I won't be getting one? Is it possible I still might?
Since this is my very FIRST violation I'm very worried and unsure on what to do next. Will I have to go to court for this? Can I just pay the fine and just get it done and over with? I accept that it was my fault for making a wrong turn so I do not think that arguing at court will do anything. Plus I'm on winter break and will be going back to college in January and I don't think I would be able to go to the court because I will out of town. I'm also concerned that I might receive a fine for showing him an expired vehicle registration when in actuality I had one up to date I just wasn't able to give it to him at first. I have done some reading about this and I've read something about the registration relating to the sticker on the license plate? My sticker is up to date so would that be considered okay? Will my insurance cost go up because of this? I have also read that the officer has 5 days to submit this incident right? If it's after 5 days will be I cleared and not have to worry?
Thank you to anyone who responds! :D:D
