Vandalism and Mischief: Walmart Restitution Payment for Damaged Item

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Omaha Nebraska
I went to Walmart and was persuaded by my friend to try and take an item for him. It was a $24 mini speaker, I opened the bottom of the packet and then I decided not to take it so I tried to get rid of it. I placed it on an aisle, as we were walking to the door we got stopped by a secret shopper. When we went to retrieve the item we had all the parts except we couldn’t find the cords. They told me the item was damaged and unsellable so I asked if I have to pay for it. Although I was just taken to a room where my driver’s license info was put on a piece of paper. No police was involved and my records were checked and it was clean since I never shoplifted. All they told me was I will be get a Restitution paper in about 2 weeks. I did some research on the internet and found out that the fine could be from $100 to $1,000. I read different comments and some people said to pay it and a lot said not to. So I want to know if I should pay it or not. I know I was wrong to try and take the item and I should pay for it for being damaged, although it’s ridiculous to have to pay up to $100 for a $24 damaged item.
