My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California
Hi and thank you for taking the time to review (and hopefully address!) my confusion. I'm contesting a ticket for crossing a double white line into a Fast Track lane (explained here), and am confused about when to appear in court. Here is the confusion:
The ticket I received from the officer states that I must "appear at the time and place indicated" and that indicated time and place is 8:30am on March 29 at the Metro Courthouse. Seems pretty clear to me. However, on the subsequent courtesy notice, March 29 was referred to as a "due date" and the letter suggests I "take action" before then. Okay. So when I went online to "take action", there was no mention about appearing on March 29, and instead when I selected to have an arraignment I was told to appear at 8:30am on April 4. Great. But what about that March 29 business?
So two questions:
1. When do I have to appear? April 4? March 29? Both? It seems to be in writing (in different places) that I need to appear on both. But that doesn't make sense, as this is a simple traffic infraction, not a misdemeanor or anything serious.
2. Am I supposed to pay in advance? The ticket seems to suggest so, but the courtesy notice says if I'm contesting I don't have to pay. I don't want to get this wrong and owe more money than the cost of the original ticket--which on its own I can't afford. I really can't afford to pay this regardless of the law, but I want to handle this within the appropriate bounds of the law.
I tried to reach the Traffic Clerk's office today, but it just rang incessantly until I was disconnected. After reading the sticky thread about Los Angeles budget cuts, I assume lack of funding is why. (Note: I guess they lost funding so quickly, no one bothered to remove the listing directing people to call the number--whoops. I wonder if the writing on the ticket demanding I show up on March 29 is equally obsolete.) I'm in danger of having to lose out on much-needed work/money to attempt to resolve this seemingly banal question in person. I'm really trying to do this right to save my precarious finances from further problems. Please, can anyone shed light on this written contradiction about when I am required to appear? And the more subtle confusion about if I must pay?
I really appreciate your help! Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond to my question. And I hope this is helpful for future violators struggling to understand this step in the process.
Regards,
SS
