Violation & Enforcement: Do I File a Restraining Order What Exactly Does It Entail

My question involves restraining orders in the State of: Minnesota
My best friends ex boyfriend and father of her child has been harassing me for YEARS. today I woke up to a text that said if he found out i went near his daughter it will all be bad because he found out where i live. Although it does clearly identify his daughter, the text was from a random number (he uses a different one each time he contacts me). I have pictures of two different incidents of contact. I know it was a bad idea, but i texted him that if he didnt back off i would file a harassment or restraining order which resulted in him saying if I do anything, hell do something 'ten times worse.' then proceeded to tell me that he 'knew things about me', such as secrets i've told to my best friend and stuff he thinks happened (hes very possessive over my best friend and thinks we had sex when we went on vacation a few months ago.) so hes basically threatening to come to my house if i go near his daughter (he doesnt like me because i'm a lesbian, and thinks that equates to pedophile, which it doesnt. he also thinks i've got the hots for my best friend.) and hes threatening that if I tell or do anything, he'll tell lies and things to my fiance. My fiance is also very volatile in terms of jealousy so if he does tell her some BS, she'll freak out and maybe leave me. Do i file a restraining order? what is MN's view on 3rd party contact (if he contacts my fiance)? do restraining orders have consequences for slander? please help soon.
