Contract Law: Commercial Retail Space Lease

My question involves business law in the state of: California. I looking for information on Commercial Retail Space Leases. I had a 5 year lease, that I broke due to the loss of business after moving into a retail center. The space has been leased again (twice), but is now vacant 2 years later and the owner is tryin to sue for danages... Doesn't the new leases and new tenants void my responsibility to this space? If not, wouldn't they have to show an itemized break down of damages being claimed? Thanks.
