Transfer of Title: Where Can I Go from Here

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Illinois

Last year I bought a car directly from the previous owner. I swapped out the plates for the ones from my old car, as she wanted to keep hers. She signed over the Title and gave me a Bill of Sale. I, being a fecking idiot, took them home and promptly forgot all about them.:wallbang: I never registered the car in my name. I never got plates of it's own for it. In the past month it was called to my attention that this is stupidly illegal and I should get on that. Since then I have been combing through all of my records for either the Title and Bill of Sale or any hint of contact information for this woman, of which there is none.

I can't use the plates to look her up, and the DMV and Police legally can't give me any information on the owner of a particular VIN.

So here's the question; do I have any legal recourse at all here? I paid for the car but I have literally no way of proving that. I can't get even a Title bond to work around the issue, because I don't have a Bill of Sale.

I'm at a complete loss and honestly at the end of my rope.
