Transfer of Title: Bought Van at Auction, Found It Had Lein, What Are My Rights

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Maryland

I bought a van at storage auction in Maryland, after being told they had title. After purchase, they gave me the title, which had been signed over by owner. Also i saw then the title had a lien. I have now invested in and replaced a few costly items as well as numerous hours of electrical work to get the vehicle running and have been storing it now in Virginia. I live in Virginia. Finally I was able to contact lien holder with request to release the lien. The lien holder is in New York. They responded that there is a 4800 balance due plus late penalties from previous owner totaling about $7000.

I now have roughly $1200 invested in the vehicle. Is there a way I can recoup my investment by placing a lien on the vehicle, claiming abandon vehicle, and selling it that way? Or am I legally allowed to sell parts or the engine out of the vehicle?

Or do I have any recourse againt the auctioneer for selling a vehicle without a clear title?
