My question involves malpractice in the state of: California
I'm in my early 20s, so I still get insurance through my parents. My mom and I also have similar first names: for the purposes of this forum, let's say my mom's name is Anna, and my name is Anna Claire. On my insurance card, it's simply truncated to Anna and this is how it's entered into every EMR at every medical practice I've ever been to (I'm told my name must match the insurance card exactly).
I moved out a little over half a year ago to a different part of the state, and set up a new primary care provider, etc. I worked this all out with my insurance - I told them I moved, I told them my new address, and they set me up with a new physician. Only all of a sudden I'm receiving all of my parent's personal insurance information (both my mom AND my dad's), and they're receiving all of mine. Before I had time to fix this, my parents received a letter from the insurance company (addressed simply to "Anna X," so my mom opened it thinking it was for her) about a new medication I was on, and what the diagnosis was - a diagnosis I did NOT want to share with my family, and had only shared with one very close friend.
What I don't understand is - my insurance company knows where I live, how old I am, and what physician I'm seeing. They also know where my parents live, and what physicians they're seeing. Yet they are sending my information from my physician to my parent's address halfway across the state, and vice versa. These locations are in no way geographically close to each other, except that they're in the same state - it seems like a pretty obvious mistake.
Is this an error on my part, or that of my insurance company? If the latter, can something be done about it? Thank you in advance.
