My question involves business law in the state of: NYC

I am actually from Canada but I just need some simple advice hopefully its the same in both countries.
My spouse got hired by a customer to do a crown molding job in his home. The customer was serving drinks, snacks, and complimenting the work. A few days later he decided to send my spouse a message saying he hired new guys to fix the job, took multiple photos, and has quotes for the work that got fixed. Its total B.S to me because he never once made a comment about anything being wrong. He is now sending multiple threats saying he will see him in court and there will be legal+admin charges along with the 800 dollars. Its ridiculous. Any advice? He did everything so by the books it makes me wonder how many times hes done this to people. Then he says "its not my fault you are broke and your work sucks those two go hand in hand" .. lol. What a dork I cant believe men are like this.
