Retail Fraud / Shoplifting: Caught Shoplifting Item Less Than $100 from Nordstrom

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Massachusetts

Item was less than $100, first offense, 19 years old. They made me sign 3 papers (one saying that I was banned for 2 years, one that acknowledged that I shoplifted, the last one I'm not sure). They took pics of me, my license, my bag, and merch. They took down the address on my license (which is an old address - could I get in trouble for this?). LP mentioned something about paying a fine, but did not mention anything about prosecuting me. I think the fine is the civil demand, which I am willing to pay, but after doing much research, many attorneys advise against paying this fee. Furthermore, I will be studying abroad next week and I am not sure when the civil demand will arrive in the mail. I'm scared that they're gonna try to take me to court because they'll say that I refused to pay the fine although I will not be in the states. What should i do? Should I try to contact Nordstrom civil claims and update my address? Should I pay the civil demand fine? Please help and thank you!
