My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: Maryland. I bought my new car 2 1/2 years ago from a pretty large dealership here in the DC/MD area. Unfortunately, last weekend my car was flooded in Ellicott City during the floods. The insurance adjuster called me on Friday and said the the VIN number they had on file was not the one that was on the car. That I needed to submit a copy of my buyers order from the dealer that showed the correct VIN. Luckily I had a copy of it in my email from when I submitted it to my credit union for approval when I got the car in 2015. However I decided to call my credit union to confirm the VIN they had on file, and I find out they have the same VIN that my insurance company has, as well as the title for that VIN. After trying to think back to when I got the car, I now remember what probably could have happened. When I went to initially look at the car I wanted, they didnt have the one I wanted in stock. But to start discussing price and numbers/negotiating they had another vehicle there that was similarly priced(my guess), to use as a temporary vin just to get the numbers together. I worked with the GM of the dealership during this time. When the car I wanted was located and brought to the dealership, I came in and worked with the finance manager on finishing up the process. (I never took possession of the other VIN, or even saw it or sat in it). I got the VIN off of the car I wanted and submitted it to the bank for processing. I picked up the promissory note and brought it back to the dealership later that day. Picked up the car that night. I remember at some point during the transaction having to resign the paperwork because they didnt correct the VIN, but I didnt think anymore about it. So after finding out that my actual car was not titled to my bank and instead the other VIN was, I decided to pay for a carfax report on both VINs just to see what they both said. My car that I actually was driving for the last 2 1/2 years was never titled to an owner, and still showed that the original dealership that hadnt possession of the car (not the dealership I bought it from) and has had possession of he title (on paper) since the car was manufactured and sent to them in 2014. The incorrect VIN has had 3 owners according to carfax and that incorrect vin also has a minor accident attached to it, which I had with my car. So that incorrect vin has been titled to me, and shows and accident that never happened with that vin. Meanwhile Ive been paying on a car Ive never had possession of, and driving a car thats not even tied to my name for the last 2.5 years. Im going to the dealer Monday to see if I can get any of the paperwork that they may have from when I bought the car. Now, one last fact... when I spoke to my credit union on Friday they did say that I did originally send them a different vin (for the car I actually had), but when they received the title, the vin was different so they changed it on their end. Im pretty sure thats why insurance has that incorrect vin too. Sorry for the long post, I just dont know what my next steps are. How will the dealer be able to fix this? What are my options? They screwed up big time here and I want them to fix it. Also the VIN that my bank and insurance have on file is for a silver 4-door. I have a blue 2-door.
