Sales Agreements: Sold Car Verbally "As Is" Buyer Wants Money Back

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: CA
We just sold a truck privately to an acquaintance. It was sold without ever posting it online, just by word of mouth. The buyer knew the check engine light was on. We told him what we though it might be but stated many times we are not mechanics. He test drove it with his girlfriend. He decided to buy it. We took his money, and transferred the title.
Now (days later) he says that he had it checked out by a mechanic and it has 4-5 grand worth of work it needs and he wants his money back.
We in no way intended to screw him over but the money is already gone and we are in no way financially able to help (even if we wanted to)
Is there any legal problems that we can have because of this?
