My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Texas.
I am a driver in Texas who has had his license for around seven months. I am eighteen years old.
Today, I took my friends to go on our first little mini road trip, about four hours into the heart of Texas. On our way though, I got hit with a monster speeding ticket. Although I know it probably doesn't mean anything, I was not going over the speed limit intentionally. We had just been on a highway with a large limit of 75, and I guess I had missed a quick change. I had the car on cruise control because we had been going 75 on that same road for maybe thirty miles. All the sudden, I noticed a cop and tried to slow down and, like all who try to trick the cop into forgetting what they know they saw, I failed miserably.
She informed me that I wasn't just speeding, but that I was doing 75 in a 40 zone. I know that she had been parked in that spot on the side of the road waiting, because of the abrupt change in speed, to trap people. I don't blame her at all-- I realize that what I did was dangerous and the mark of a driver that deserves punishment.
But I honestly want to minimize the damage this is going to do to my record and, to a greater extent, my insurance costs. My parents don't make a ton of money, and I don't want them paying for my stupid mistake.
I have several questions:
1) What is my best strategy for dealing with this?
2) Will I likely lose my license for this? It is my first offense, but I do recognize that it's an uncommonly large violation, especially for a new driver.
3) Is there a way I can respond to this situation without making my insurance costs shoot to the moon?
I appreciate any advice. I have been sitting at the computer for hours trying to figure out what to do, but it really is a maze of information.
