Should I Appeal This Unemployment Claim

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: .CA

Hello all, I am a painting contractor and I received a letter from the EFF today stating that I owe unemployment to a past employee. He worked for me for a total of 6 weeks starting april 2016 and my recollection was that he was terminated for poor workmanship. The only proof I have of that is that is our busiest season and having hired two more guys 5 weeks after his termination and maintaining multiple employees since. I have records of payroll as well, everything is on the books.
The letter states total wages from me and others is $14,794, percent of charges to my reserve account is 18%, his weekly benefit is $252 with a max of $6552 and weekly max charges of $46. I'd like to ask what I could possibly owe since his total wages from me were less thank $3,000, and if you think I should appeal? ..and as always, I'm happy to offer any tips on painting your house ;) Thank you in advance
