My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York.
The other day I stupidly shoplifted a $20 shirt from a small store in the fitting room. I was not stopped by anyone but I regretted it the second I stepped outside. However I bought one item of clothing at the register using my debit card, meaning that they have my name and there were definitely quite a few cameras around, but obviously not in the dressing room. I'm so nervous and sick to my stomach that the police are going to come after me. I even thought about returning to the store and just fessing up and giving the shirt back and the $20 so I can sleep at night but I was told by a friend that that is a bad idea. I guess my question is, will the police come to my house over this shirt? If they do, do I say I'm innocent? I'm not sure what the cameras have footage of me doing. All I know is that was my first and last time ever shoplifting. Any advice is welcome please and thank you.
