Legal to Do

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Tennessee

I had a car that I was financing, the car broke down, I took it to a mechanic, they played games with me for months about it getting fixed, finally he calls back and tells me it not worth fixing, aka blown head gasket and screwed the motor, so he suggest I sell him the car. I agree, but he never pays, instead he says I owe him for his labor and the car sitting on his lot, I tried to get him to let me tow the car but he wouldn't, I tried to negotiate the labor into the sale price but he refused and then tells me he sold it at auction. Now, how can this guy sell my car, without paying me and without the title, since the bank still has the title? Seems to me like the guy just stole my car and sold it and pocketed the money. Is this even legal? This was almost a year ago now and I am still making payments, the guy avoids my calls and never calls me back
