Settling a Debt: Debt Responcibility

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Florida

My question is this: I have outstanding debt with an Emergency medical service that i do not dispute owing. I do however feel that the way it has been handled that I have done my due diligence in attempting to pay this debt down and the negligence of the company has prevented that from working out. Since the beginning with this company I have had nothing but problems. There have been payments made that were returned to my bank weeks later causing Payments to not be applied to the account. They sent the bill to collections when payments were made and when contacted they said it should not have been sent to collections and I had money tied up for weeks because the money was also sent to the collections company who stated they never received the money. The last payment I made to them was to close out the account for a lump sum of the remainder, which is no small sum for me, which was drafted from my account. About 2 weeks later the money was refunded back to my bank account without any prompting from myself or anyone. So i guess with all that said do i have any legal footing to deny any further payments because of the company's negligence and due diligence on my part to pay the debt owed?
