Unregistered Vehicles: What to Do After Default on a Ticket for Driving an Unregistered, Uninsured Car

My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Illinois.
I was given a ticket for my vehicle registration being expired and driving without insurance. At the time I did have insurance but did not have proof of insurance in the car with me so I was given a court date of March 4 to prove that I was driving insured. I had just lost my grandfather and also had a 3 week old child at home so when the police officer handed the ticket to me the court date was written as "Mar 4 16" and I read it as May not Mar. The policeman was nice and asked me if I would be able to make the date and my response was "yeah, it's not until May" my guess is he wasn't listening.
This week I received a notice for a fee of $2000 and went to the courthouse to contest the fee. The time for that is tomorrow morning. Today I received a notice of my license being suspended for driving uninsured.
No clue what to say or do during my hearing tomorrow. Any help is greatly appreciated.
