Weapons Offenses: Carrying a Weapon on Your Own Property

My question involves criminal law for the state of: South Carolina

Hi all. I own my home. Well, the bank actually does I guess. :friendly_wink: Due to some random events in the area last year where people out working in their yards where robbed at gun point, I began carrying a pistol when I am outside working. I didn't want to bring attention to myself so it was concealed. A woman walking a dog happened to see it when I was on my knees working in a flower bed. I didn't know that until two police cars showed up. I wasn't held at gunpoint but the officers had their hands on their weapons and ordered me to put the pistol on the ground and step away from it.
Long story short, I was informed that, even on my property, I can not have it on my person unless I have a carry permit. I didn't have one at that time. I have since taken the course and I am waiting for the permit. My question is were these officers correct? I was under the impression that you can legally have a firearm on your own property whether you have a permit or not. One of the officers even told me that I had to keep it inside the house. I don't think he's correct. I was not arrested or charged with anything but I was warned that if they came back out I would be. A police officer from a neighboring community gave the course I took and I completely forgot to ask him about this. I have tried to get in touch with him but he's very busy so I thought I would ask here. I have tried calling the local police to inquire about this but have yet to get a call from anyone.
