Motions: Waiver of Deferral Right by Contesting or No Such Thing

My question involves traffic court in the State of: Washington

I just got a speeding ticket but have a very clean record. Don't want to waste a deferral. Seems prudent to contest, get discovery, and then decide on whether to use my deferral.

Can anyone confirm that there is no loss of deferral right simply by first contesting? In other words, is my deferral right preserved through the contesting/discovery process, or is there some deadline by which I must either claim or lose my deferral option?

Whitman County district court (Pullman area). Apparently no local rules, so no pretrial hearing requirement?

WSP, ticket for 5 MPH over, 60 MPH speed limit.

Maybe this is a question for the clerk, but looking for guidance here first.
