My question involves business law in the state of: Michigan. As I understand it, the sole authority for issuing UPC code prefixes is GS1 US. It appears codes are only leased while one is a member there and continues to pay annual dues. Yet I see lots of sites reselling code prefixes. How can they be sold if they are leased, and/or what happens when the lease runs out? Is this legal? I want to buy one for a single product I plan to sell locally, a few at a time.
