Behavior Regulation: Threats of Violence and Sexist Requests from Customers and Clients

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Tennessee

Hello,

I am a clerk at a courthouse/court center. I have been there for over five years. Recently, an angry defendant came to my window to file paperwork. He demanded his request be heard that same day in front of his preferred judge. I said his request cannot be heard today and it must be in front of the judge for the case. He became outraged. He threaten to harm me if he does not get what he wants because he is not getting the date and judge that he wants. I went to notify my supervisor. During this time he moved to a different counter and was aggressive and violent to another clerk. We both confirmed our experiences with him to our supervisors. Our supervisor assisted the defendant and returned to her office.

I asked my supervisor if she or another clerk can assist this defendant in the future. This person has threaten to harm me and may return to harm me if his request is denied by the judge. My supervisor could not answer my question and went to her supervisor. Then, his supervisor went to our boss. Our boss said I must help this person despite being threaten, and it is not their office's responsibility or reliability in this type of situation. I asked why am I being put in harms why, and I was not trained for this type of situation. I was only trained for one day. This angered my supervisors. They dismissed me for the day as punishment without pay or they will take annual leave from me.

This is not my first negative experience with customers. Customers often make racist comments and requests. I was disciplined after a sexist customer did not want me to help her and only wanted my female customers. However, she filed a complaint saying that I would not help her. I have witnesses proving my incident. My employer said to me that sexism and racism no longer exist in this day and age, and I am being a crybaby.

This is not my original position. I lost my position after a coworker lied that I was having and trying to have sexual relations with a coworker. I was forced to transfer less than a year from filing a complaint and the coworker who lied was given my position. My employer said I will face retaliation for my complaint.

This is not my first incident with my employer. I posted this earlier. https://www.expertlaw.com/forums/sho...993&highlight=
I will keep it brief. In my previous position, it was my job duty to contact officers for any corrections on paperwork and dates. However, one officer was offended that I contacted him and I was written up. I send our office letter to him for corrections. This letter has been sent by office for years, and we have 60 women and one guy who is me. My previous supervisor created the memo years ago. Even my write up says it was one of my daily duties, but the officer was offended to get the notice fro me. They never complained about the notice until it was sent from a man. I wasn't trying to punish the guy. We just needed a correction to continue the case's progression. At the time the rule indirectly changed that only the women in the office can send the notice and I was not allowed to anymore as part of my daily duties.

Is my employer responsible for creating a hostile work environment? Would my employer be responsible if I am physically harmed by any defendant threatening harm and they were made aware? They refused to provide a solution.
