Private Sales: How to Protect Yourself from Liability When Selling a Car on Craigslist

How does one go about protecting themselves from liability selling a used car on craigslist?

Was split between selling an old car for a few hundred dollars to a private party, versus just junking the thing. I think the car is a great deal for the right person, but I believe for safety reasons it requires new struts, tires, and exhaust system and didn't want want to expose myself to liability should the car fail..

I had a potential buyer, and was upfront about what I believed needed to be done, and he thought it would be good for his purposes.

Read that a bill of sale should be written up stating that: "the car is being sold as is with no warranty expressed or implied", and that "once the new owner leaves with the car I am no longer responsible for the vehicle." In addition, given the condition of the car, should I be listing out the other defects I mentioned, and if so how you'd word something like that.

In the state where I live after a private party sells a car the seller must submit a "seller notification" online. My understanding this is to ensure that the title gets transferred out of the sellers name and protects the seller in the event that the buyer hits someone before the buyer gets to the dmv to transfer the title. Do I have that right?

I'm sure people do this all the time with very old cars, selling cars with potential drivability issues, but didn't want to set myself up for a lawsuit over a couple hundred dollars.
