Drug Possession: Can a Taxi or Ride-Share Driver Be Charged for Passenger's Procession of Drugs

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan

I have read that drug dealers often use Taxis or ride-sharing services (Uber, Lyft, etc.) in order to go to a location to deal their narcotics. Here is the scenario.

A driver picks up a passenger who (unknown to the driver) has illegal drugs in his possession. The car gets pulled over. Passenger drops the drugs onto the floor of the car. Police search (with or without driver consent) the car and recover the drugs. Both the passenger and the driver deny ownership. What can the driver do to protect himself from a drug possession charge?

I know that in general, a driver is responsible for the contents of his car, and usually if driving people you know, this is easy to prevent. However while driving for a taxi or ride share service, you are dealing with strangers from the general public, and there is no way to reliably tell if a person has drugs, or other illegal items prior to allowing them to enter your vehicle. For the record, I am not involved in any part of this situation, I am just genuinely curious. I would love to hear your thoughts.
