Breaking a Lease: Misleading Renewal Date

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Pennsylvania. My Fiance rented an apt for 5 years. In February of 2016 he received a letter stating that he had to sign the letter stating that he was moving. The letter stated that if he didn't sign his lease would be renewed until April 30th of 2016. They now say that they made a mistake in the letter and it should have read 2017. He had never rented before and had no idea that the date was wrong. He was buying a house and that date seemed ok with him. After he moved on that date they bill him for 5000 total early termination fee. My question is that will the letter they sent in February stating that his lease would be up on the very date he moved a legal document? One that will hold up in court so they can't sue for early termination fees? Thank you.
