My question involves defamation in the state of: tennessee
My 17 yr old daughter is in a relationship with a 20 yr old (she has a 3 yr old son). She is gay. Her father and I are okay with the relationship.
The adoptive mother of the 20 yr old Kicked her out due to her "lifestyle". She was not able to leave with anything but her clothes. She stayed with the 3 yr olds bio paternal grandmother for a couple of months. That was not working due to her adoptive parents owning the property she lives on. So for the moment, she is staying with us. I couldn't allow for a terrible holiday for her or her son.
The adoptive mother has made a bad habit of speaking ill of our daughter in text messages to her daughter. Very derogatory names. Now we have proof she is messaging people talking ill and incorrectly about not just my 17 yr old daughter, but also my 12 yr old son. And is condemning us for accepting our daughter being gay. Who knows who all she has spoke with.
Is there anything legally we can do? I'd rather send a formal complaint from an attorney vs. showing up on her doorstep with stern words about how she is talking about my family.
Thanks for any advice.
