Social Security rarely asks how much an SSI benefit pays for rent. Sometimes in financial redeterminations they do, sometimes they don't. What they need to know is if you own your own house or rent your own apartment/house and who lives with you.
As far as SSI keeping people from starving and being homeless... Yes, that is it's alleged objective. However, the full benefit barely allows for it. In my state, a half decent one bedroom no frills clean apartment averages about 750 to 850 (USD) per month not including utilities. More and more predatory property investors are looking to get tenants to pay more and more of their costs so they can augment their income and exploitation. Now some are charging $35.00 extra a month just for the right to have water. Some are also charging for sewage. The rent amounts are without electric and gas utilities, phone etc... With few mass transportation options during this worst capitalist crisis ever, and the severe austerity measures being imposed by Democrats and Republicans, many are forced to pay for a parking spot, if they are lucky enough to be able to afford a half decent car. Most can't afford it. What about food?
What about dental coverage, LIHEAP (cut by billions by Obama) and food stamps that have been either reduced or eliminated by Obama and state governors in order pay for the 2 trillion dollar bailouts for the rich? Section 8 or HCVP and Public Housing are being dismantled. Just take a look at the Senate bill that was past in December of 2014. Take a look at what the RAD program is all about. PRIVATIZATION. There are even what are called media stunts or Psyops that assemble stories that make it appear as though all HCVP/Sec. 8 tenants are dirty and 'bad tenants'. These are media fabrications devised so that the billionaires, via their state puppets in both democratic and republican imperialist parties, can impose more austerity on the working class and middle class. Ireland, SPain, Greece, UK and Italy have woken up to the austerity being imposed, it's time Americans do the same.
The desperately poor and the social wage get hit first. The working and unemployed people have bailed them out through direct and indirect taxes, benefit reductions, forzenwages, diminishing pensions and on and on and on. Obama is the first administration within which there were no automatic COLA's. No COLA has gone aboe 2% since 2000. Before 2000 the were as much as 4%.
