Hiring: Can You Sue if an Old Employer, Contacts Your New Employer Simply to Bad Mouth You

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Missouri

I was not sure if I posted this in the right section. This is mostly do resolve a big discussion. Say for example you have someone who found a new job. They are still at their old job but have not put in a notice yet for whatever reason. Possibly this person will not put in a notice, who knows. His manager or some person in management finds out this person has secured a new job and is planning to quit. Then completely on their own contacts the new employer in an attempt to bad mouth this new employee. If this were to happen, would this person be able to purse a lawsuit of some type?
