My question involves criminal law for the state of: Shoplifting at Wal Mart.
I am being accused of ticket switching small dollar amounts like .25 or 2.00 onto large amounts such as 300 - 400 dollar items. The amounts of which could over the past 6 months add up into thousands of dollars if they find everything. Is it legal for wal mart look up credit card details and match them with orders? They are accusing me of doing this multiple times. I walked into wal mart to return a laptop I had purchased legitimately and had the cash to purchase a better one. They stalled me for about 10-15 minutes until a police officer arrived. They showed me the pictures of my scanning two seperate items on seperate occasions. I told them I did not switch any tickets, they took my into the back office where the loss prevention lady showed the police officer footage or pictures on a monitor. She was very adamant about me not seeing them. They banned me from wal mart for life and told me to leave. They did not arrest me. The lady said she was "going to dig deep" and find everything that she could. The police officer walked me out and let me drive away. He said I would probably receive a sumons for court. Will I likely just be arrested with officers showing up at my house or will I really receive a summons? I have already contacted multiple lawyers who have not gotten back to me as of yet. The pictures they showed me only showed my scanning large ticket items and the price coming up for a shot glass or a small cutlery knife. They did not have any footage or evidence that I actually did switch the tickets that I know of. I do not know how much evidence they have. I already know to contact a lawyer ( I am calling multiple lawyers) which I am currently in the process of doing. The items may add up into the thousands of dollars I am not entirely sure. Aside from a few speeding tickets a parking violations this is the only time I have ever been in trouble. Can anyone tell me what I could possibly be facing? Is there a statute of limitations on shoplifting if they do not convict me within a certain amount of time? I am a full time employed individual, I amnot sure if that matters or not. I am accepting emails from admins and anyone else with information regarding advice on what I should do besides contact a lawyer. Please Help. Thank you very much for reading my post.
