Working with a Lawyer: Fees & Shopping Around

My question relates to legal practice in the state of: North Dakota

That's where I'm at but I assume anyone can answer as my questions from my experiences are somewhat general. I don't know if this is the norm but these have been my experiences....

I've had a lawyer several years ago start at "fair" price for my traffic ticket and continually give reasons to justify incremental hikes. I didn't use him. There was someone who did both my tickets for $500.

Looking for a traffic lawy'er again I was told $500 a week ago (for one ticket). During our conversation just now "We're losing money at $500. It'll be $750."

From this experience I called and am awaiting from a response from the second referral I was given. Which brings me to shopping around. Since I haven't retained anyone I assume this is fine but would the original lawyer keep notes if I had a problem in the future? $500 seemed pricey but the 50% increase at the last second seemed odd to me.

Tyypically I wouldn't see asking for a reduction in speed by 1 mph to be any different from any other time someone had a similar issue. Did I use a keyword (like CDL)? Too close to the hearing which my previous lawyer years back didn't seem to have any problem dealying (by months.)?
