I have been divorced since 2010 and my ex and I do not have a friendly relationship at all. I have primary custody of our two children(14 yr and 18 yr old as of Dec 2017 and both in high school). They live with me full time (don't even spend every other weekend with him) and I have always claimed them both on my taxes and my ex has always been very well aware that I am suppose to. This year I e-filed and was rejected due to our son already being claimed. He admits he claimed him.
I called the IRS and spoke with the fraud dept. and he explained that I needed to mail in my return and I would still receive my refund in they typical time frame(4-6 weeks) and later on we would both receive a letter explaining the duplicate dependent claiming.
I signed my return, included my w-2 forms, however I also included a cover page stating that my efile was rejected due to my son's SSN already being claimed.
I'm kicking myself now for including that cover letter!!
Do you think I will still receive my refund in the typical 4-6 weeks or will that cover letter I included red flag it and they will hold it until they investigate the whole thing?
Thank You!
