I have a very large collection of LPs, 8 tracks and cassettes as well as 45s, 78s and a few CDs.
I have many LPs that are duplicates simply because they were worn out or damaged over the years, some have been replaced by purchased 'official' copies (original publisher releases) on 8-track/cassette/cd over the years.
A few albums ("album" used here to mean LP vinyl) I have several copies in the original 33 1/3rd LP record, as well as 8-track, cassette tape and CD releases. In some cases I have 5-6 duplicates simply because of replacements or upgrades. Some of the music I have and own a legal copy of are simply not usable in current form (8-track) which means I have no way to use them.
I run into the same music quite often on various internet sites, does the fair use clause allow me to copy those versions for personal use?
Don't interpret this wrong, the fact is that I own several tapes and records that I can not listen to simply because I either can't afford a 'modern' copy, or there is no affordable means of playing them (78rpm records for one, the '78' speed setting started to disappear on turntables back in the 70s) And searching for '8-track' seems to show either a history or cassette to 8-track adapters, NOT 8-track players. this implies that an 8-track tape is considered by the industry as nothing more than ballast.
While I have a reputation for overthinking things,(often to my own detriment) what I'd like to know is: 'I own original/official version A of a song, can I legally download and use, (not share, that has to be defined, (I DO NOT SHARE)) a copy of the same song ?
example: I bought song 'a' on 8-track tape, 8-track players are no longer available, song 'a' available on youtube, is it fair use to download and listen to the song?
