Being Sued for Back Child Support, Do I Have to Appear in Court That’s Out of State

My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Texas

I have a son in Texas whom I’ve never seen, signed birth certificate or anything. I’m out of state working atm and at my home address(Michigan) an officer attempted to serve me with papers to appear in court over from what I was told by the officer, child support, paternity and something about being sued. He said there wasn’t even a court date on the papers but the mother said it was the 19th of March.
Do I have to appear when I’m really not able to? I’m working, and don’t have a dependable way down there(recently totaled my car and using a friends to go to work) I mean if I HAVE to be down there of course I’d find a way. Or is court via telephone possible, with me sending the papers they need down there.
Also Can I fight being sued for back child support when we didn’t have paternity 100% known? I’m fine with starting child support through the court but being sued for back pay when I don’t even know if hes mine?
Should I hire a attorney to represent me/help my case?
She won’t even send me pictures of him when I ask repeatedly.

Thanks and any other advise regarding anything close to this would be appreciated.
