My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: OH and CA
I was given an old car by a friend to drive across the country to CA. He signed the title over to me in NYC w/ a notary from a his bank present, just using the little form on the back of the title. I was planning on getting it smogged (it needs some repairs to pass CA emissions standards) and registered in my own name here in CA, but I have decided to sell it instead and get something in better condition.
The car is still registered to him, and has his name printed on the OH title and mine on the back where we signed it over.
Is it possible for me to sign the title over to the new buyer without first paying to get it repaired and smogged and registered in my name here in CA? If so, how? I would prefer to just sign over to new seller (like I did with the previous owner) and let him worry about repairs + registration, but there is no more room on the back of the title for a 3rd owner, and I don't even know if that is legal.
Thanks!
