Moving In: Pmc Changed Move-in Date

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: CA

I live in a large apartment complex. For months I had been on a waiting list for a ground floor 3 bedroom unit. One became available and I signed a transfer. My lease was changed and I have all the paperwork that clearly shows that my notice to vacate date was 05/19, my move out date of my current unit was 07/15 and my move in date for the new unit was 07/14. Those dates were not of my choosing in any way! They were based on when the current tenet of the three bedroom unit was moving based on the notice he gave. He gave notice on May 8th. May 8th is when I signed the transfer papers and May 19th is when everything was final.

Over this past weekend, the current 3 bed tenet decided to transfer to a vacant 2 bed unit in the complex. On Tuesday we were told that he already moved, the unit is being turned over and if we want it we have to move in 06/14 as they will not let it sit empty for a month.

Now, we have to come up with lots of additional funds and scramble to move in two weeks if we want to reclaim what we have paperwork stating is ours with a move-in date of 07/14.

Is that legal? Can they change our move-in date like that? Do we have any recourse here?
