Traffic Accidents: What Happens if an Employee is Named in a Traffic Accident Lawsuit

My question involves an accident/injury that occurred in the state of Tennessee:

My son is an employee of a large utility. One morning almost a year ago he was on his way to his first work location driving a company truck and he ran a red light and hit vehicles in cross traffic. The police cited him with a ticket for running the red light and he paid it.

This week he was served with notice of a lawsuit naming him and the company/subsidiaries he works for. The notice said he has 30 days to respond.

He is a good young man. No arrests, booze/drugs, etc ever. He was terribly upset over the accident. He would never harm anyone intentionally.

His employer did not fire him over the accident as he was operating the vehicle within the speed limit (on board GPS data) and within company policies.

He carries personal auto liability insurance, but he has student loans, personal vehicle loan and house loan so his liabilities vastly outweigh his assets like everyone just starting out. He is upset that he might lose everything he has been working for if his employer and insurance company don't fully cover the damages the court would grant for the accident.

We want to help him, but no one in our family has never been in this situation before. I am concerned that that lack of knowledge/experience will come to bite us if we don't negotiate the system correctly. I have some questions below and also would be interested in hearing from attorneys and others that have been in this situation and what you might have experienced/learned, good and bad.

My questions:

Can we be sure his company was also served with the paperwork from the civil lawsuit court or is it my son's responsibility to notify his employer of being served and give them the service paperwork he received? (He notified his boss the day he received the service).

Does he need a separate lawyer to process his part of the legal service/defend his interests or will that interfere with his employer's legal process?

What information should he give his personal auto insurer about the lawsuit and should it go to his local sales agent?

Any other suggestions on how to best proceed or watch out for?

What are his risks here and what should he do?

Thank you,
