My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
I was shopping at Macy's and I tried stuff on in the dressing room. I had a shoulder bag and I was on the phone walking out of the store. After I walked out of the store a guy comes up to me out of no where from the side and says can we go back inside to talk about the merchandise you didn't pay for? He had no identification of being part of Macy's security and so I reply confused asking what he is talking about. He says what's in your bag I say nothing and ask if he has a warrant. He doesn't answer me and then another girl comes out and I recognize her as one of the sales associates. I keep asking to see some identification and asking if he has a warrant but he still wouldn't comply. So they walk me up into the office and now I have to pay almost $500. I am a minor so they didn't call the police and can't charge me more than $500. However, how would they have known that there was merchandise in my bag if there are not cameras in the dressing room? There were no sensors on the clothes and I took off the tags. It's not like I was out in public stuffing clothes into my bag. I kept telling him I know my rights but wouldn't the 4th amendment have protected me? Could I have just kept walking to my car?

Did Macy's Security Have the Right to Search My Bag
