Other Violations: Use of Private Property to Avoid Traffic Control Device in Michigan

I was driving to work this morning (4:30 am), it was dark and I failed to notice the sign that said the road was closed to through traffic. At the barriers where the road is closed is the entrance to an apartment complex, so I turned in and drove through to get to the street that I needed to get through. I got pulled over and given a ticket for "use of private property to avoid a traffic control device''.

Is it illegal to drive through an apartment complex if the through road is closed for construction? There are no signs that say ''private property'' at the entrance to the complex.

I don't want the points on my record. What do I need to say when appearing before the judge in traffic court. I have a clean record (it has been over 20 years since my last ticket)
