Failing to Maintain Lane Control

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: North Carolina

I recently received a ticket for "failing to maintain lane control within a single lane while driving on the street with clearly marked lines for traffic, G.S. 20–146(D)(1)."

On a clear afternoon on a simple two-lane road in the country, the driver in front of me stopped abruptly to turn. For fear of a collision without enough time to stop my vechicle, I pulled my vehicle off the road - comfortably in control - but with very little shoulder, I went slowly into the ditch and dented the side of my car.

No one or thing was hurt aside the side of my car. The other driver did not stop or check on me. I don't know if he even noticed.

I wasn't even going to report it and pay for my repairs myself, but a county sheriff deputy drove by and called the state highway patrol.

The state patrol officer wrote me the ticket, saying my vehicle was new enough thatthe damage 'required him to write the ticket, and that I should be able to have it "taken care of" when I go to my court date.

What happens when I go? What do I say? Is it really just a formality, or am I going to be assessed points? Is there going to be a prosecutor making a case against me, or am I just talking to a judge? Are there grounds for having it dismissed? It is completely victimless aside from my wallet and insurance. I dealt with the situation the safest way I knew how.
