My parents have been renting the same house since 2003 for the same amount. A few years ago, their landlord died and left the property to a relative. Before he died though, he made a verbal agreement with my parents that they could stay there as long as they liked, paying the same amount that they were then. This agreement is known by the original landlords daughter. The new landlord has recently presented them a new contract which, among other things, wants to raise the rent by 25% and not allow them to hang clothes on a clothe line. (Haven't read it myself, so I don't know the full extent.)
My question is, is the previous verbal agreement still binding, even though the person to whom the agreement was made with has passed away? If so, how can my parents deal with this?
