Expenses: Mom Doesn't Want to Pay Medical Expense

My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Washington

The youngest daughter is 18. Last couple of years she has chosen to see a therapist. I am the stepmom and carry the secondary insurance for medical expenses. The mom is the residential parent.

The mom doesn't like the kid's choice to see a therapist, but doesn't really have a legitimate excuse to stop her.

From what I can gather, last year the therapist's billing office called mom to get new insurance. Mom carries the primary insurance.

I have been told by the therapist's office that Mom gave them the wrong insurance to bill. That insurance denied coverage, so they then billed my secondary. My insurance covered it. EXCEPT - my insurance assumed they were paying as primary, and when they realized this year that they were supposed to be secondary, they contacted the book keeper and demanded reprocessing, and their money back.

Because of the child's age and it being a "sensitive" medical situation, I didn't have access to view the claims to insurance, and all the billing details were going to mom's house.

The book keeper called the mom, and the mom accused them of lying and intentionally billing the wrong insurance. She then gave the correct insurance information. That just finished processing in July. However, that insurance will only accept claims back 12 months, from what I can gather.

So the therapy sessions prior to that are now covered by no insurance. This is a lot of money.

The book keeper called the mom, and she flipped out. From the therapist told me, mom was screaming, swearing, and then calling and calling, and essentially terrorizing the book keeper. So the book keeper called my husband in tears. My husband, being a traditional guy, can't start to hear a woman cry, so he told her to send us the information and we would see what we can do.

So it landed in my lap to assess. Knowing the mom, I have no doubt the book keeper is telling the truth. I am pretty certain the mom mucked this up because she doesn't like the kid attending therapy, and didn't realize that her shenanigans would have a price tag.

But the therapist wants to be paid. She wanted us to pay all of it, then make the mom pay us back. I told her that since we pay child support to the mom, and are supposed to only cover a percentage of medical bills, we don't have any teeth to get the money out of the mom. The best we could do is pay our percentage, and give the therapist a copy of the court order. The therapist seems to understand. But what if the mom refuses to pay? Do we have any legal problems to be concerned about?
