Auto Insurance: Auto Omitted from Policy Due to Insurance Company Error, Now They Want Me to Pay

My question involves insurance law for the state of: Maryland.

I received my policy renewal and noticed my 2016 auto had been omitted. I contacted the insurance company. The customer service rep told me I had added the auto on 8/25/16, and my renewal was on 9/14/16 which did not allow the policy time to include the adjustment. Meaning, I've been driving an entire year without coverage and didn't know it. However, on 8/26/16, I called to remove another auto from the policy and that change was reflected in my policy and I also received a towing service card with the 2016 auto identified on it. At the time, I called the insurance company to add the new auto, I was given a quote of the amount I've been paying for a year.

The customer service rep admits it was the insurance company's error, however, to add the auto to my policy now I would have to pay the amount I should have been charged in 2016, plus the revised renewal rate for 2017 to avoid a lapse in coverage. If I would have filed a claim I doubt if the insurance company would have honored it since I hadn't paid the increased amount.

I've been with the insurance company for 30 years and my payments are made automatically monthly. Why should I have to pay for the insurance company's error or for service or product I did not receive. My billing for the new auto should be prorated from the time I notified the insurance company of the error 7/31/17 to my renewal date 9/14/17 and from 9/14/17 to 9/14/18 for my full 2017 renewal rate. Also, there should be no negative lapse of coverage attributed to my insurance record regarding this vehicle. Please advise me of my options to resolve this issue. Thank you.
