My question involves court procedures for the state of: Federal
What exactly defines libel, and when can an individual be sued for it? I'm hearing the term thrown around a lot lately with regard to certain high profile cases, but I still don't understand exactly how and when it could be used in a case. Let's say someone is simply wrong about a scenario involving a person, but they did not knowingly provide false information..... would that be libel? Also, what if an individual suspects something that's not true. You see this a lot with regard to conspiracy theories, very disturbing ideas and accusations with no evidence whatsoever. It seems as though the internet is full of untrue and highly negative comments and information about other people, especially when it comes to politics or anything else controversial. So, specifically what false, negative information would be considered libel..... because it seemed like if any false and negative statement were considered libel, there would be new cases every five minutes given the inaccuracies and harebrained theories that you routinely come across online? Also, what about tabloids? Why are they legal if it's illegal to knowingly create false information that has the power to damage their reputation?
