My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: NEW YORK
Okay, so I know this sounds paranoid and strange, but I was let go from my job on Tuesday. I found a strange key in my totebag later that day, which I absolutely know is not mine and that I never put there.
It could be the key to something in the office (there was an issue the week before with looking for the key to the door, which is never used, it's locked in another way), or to a client's apartment, I don't know.
All I know is, I didn't put it in my bag, and I don't recognize it.
I would generally leave my totebag by my desk, where I used to sit the desk is by itself, no other desks around. The totebag was left unattended when I was in the restroom, etc.
What do I do? I know it sounds paranoid for me to say I'm being set up for something I didn't do, when I don't even know what it is. However, my employer is in financial trouble, and . . well . . .I don't know what they would do to cause trouble. I know it seems hard to believe that the boss would put someone up to doing that, but I know that in the past they accused a former person in my position of stealing money, which I am sure she did not do.
What do I do with this key? I can't think of a way it got into my bag OTHER than at work, and I know that i didn't put it in there.
(I turned in to HR the card that I use to get in the building.)
Advice, thoughts, etc.
