Rental Agreements: 60 Day Notice After Following the Lease Through the Full 12 Months

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of:
Approximately 60 days ago we received a letter from our landlord that stated to return the letter by a specific date if we were planning on renewing our lease. Well we weren't going to renew so we did not turn it in and have paid our rent on time every month and have fulfilled the lease to it's end date (after 12 mths) and now they are stating that we did not give them a 60 day termination notice, but they never received a renewal notice and we have paid through the termination date of our lease. How is this possible? They new we were not renewing well over 60 days ago when they did not receive our renewal form. We are not "skipping" out on our lease and have paid in full through the 12 months. Can they do this?? I thought that a 12 month lease was a contract that ended on the last day of that lease and no renewal submitted. Can you help explain this or is it best for me to get our attorney involved, which I may do anyway.
Thank you for any feed back you can give -- this is crazy!!
