My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Colorado
The father of my child gave up full physical and legal custody when she was 8 months old. He owes nearly 30K in child support and has only visited a few days in her life.
He now wants to relinquish parental rights, but what I've researched it can only happen if a person steps in to adopt.
My brother and her God Father both say they would be willing to adopt, but neither of them live in Colorado. They are both financially and emotionally stable people.
Would the courts grant the adoption of either one of them, considering the blood father is still alive? (My first choice would be to have my brother adopt).
I am single and have done a wonderful job raising my daughter on my own, without monitary or physical support from anyone.
I simply want to grant the blood father's wish because he is an unstable man mentally, he can't hold a job, he goes by 7 different last names, he uses drugs, and was emotionally and physically abusive during our marriage.
He has not been in the picture, and I would like to allow my daughter to be able to say she has a father.
Lawyers in my town do not have much insight on this situation since they have not come across a case like this before.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!!
