Disabilities and Accommodation: Is It Discrimination if My Mother's Boss Criticizes Her Use of a Cane

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Iowa.

My mother has received a lot of degrading comments from her direct supervisor because she walks with a cane. She suffers from severe arthritis in her feet, ankles and knees. She's a security guard and must walk around a fairly large building every night. At first her site supervisor demanded that she could not use the cane because it does not look professional. She continued to use it much to his displeasure, because she can't get around without it. He still continues to make demeaning comments to her regarding the cane on a regular basis.

When she arrives to work, her boss forces her to hide her cane where it's out of easy reach for her. He forces her to walk down a set of stairs, which greatly increases her risk of falling. He is concerned she can't properly fulfill her duties as security. Yet to this point, she has accomplished all her expected tasks with use of the cane. She got a doctor's excuse and turned it in to upper management, due to all his criticism.

Just wondering if she has any legal recourse here.
