Home Insurance: Insurance Denied Due to Impending Hurricane

My question involves insurance law for the commonwealth of: Virginia

I recently purchased a "vacation home" - a camper on a permanent lot in a campground. Not to rent out but to escape on weekends and whatnot. The closing was this past Saturday. On Thursday & Friday of last week, I received two quotes for insurance. I did not commit because the unit was not yet in my name. Today, Monday, I called the insurance agent I wanted to go with. Come to find out since Virginia (and North Carolina) has declared a state of emergency, the underwriters are not accepting any new policies until hurricane Florence goes through later these week (in my opinion, a severe over reaction). I did not know insurance companies did this - if I had, I would have signed up last week before I legally owned the house. Now I am stuck without insurance. I imagine they do this to avoid people who sign up only in the face of impending disaster. I can understand denying insurance if the winds/water/slash whatever has affected your unit (it is still sunny and nice here and will be through Wednesday or longer).

So I'm not one of these people asking for insurance because a hurricane is coming. I have had insurance continuously on my house for 30+ years. I am willing to pay the full year in advance.

I can't believe there isn't some law that protects me. This does not seem right to me. If I buy a car, I am automatically insured for the first 30 days. So I am perplexed that the insurance companies want to take my money if all is well but not if they have to pay out. I would have also thought my good standing of 30+ years (and two small claims) would have carried some weight - but the decision is all encompassing.

Any advice or suggestions anyone can offer? Any laws to quote?
