Merchant Threatening to Send Police for a Chargeback

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: South Carolina

Hi, all!

I purchased a custom item from out of the country made to my measurements; under $200. Everything was pleasant and went well until I received the product. It differs greatly from the online images, it doesn't fit (not anywhere close), and there were scratches all over from presumably a cutting tool (product is leather).

I politely contacted the merchant and sent multiple photos of the scratches, photos that it didn't fit at all, and side by side comparisons that it doesn't match their website photos. They said sorry but that their policies said no returns. I responded, still polite, saying that I wasn't simply changing my mind or wanting a different color.. these were not what I ordered. The merchant continued to deny responsibility. After I sent more photos, they admitted to the damage but that it happened during shipping. This is absolutely impossible; despite their inferior product, they did package the product nicely and well cushioned.

Long story short, I tried to work it out with them over a month. They refused to help, so I initiated a chargeback with my bank. A few days later, I had the amount in my account as a credit while my bank investigates.

This morning I get an email from the merchant saying what I did was fraudulent, illegal, and they would be prosecuting me to the fullest extent of the law including seeking damages for employee down time (what? Say what? I literally sent emails, I didn't kick anyone in the knee) and legal fees, and that they'd also be sending their country's police as well as my local police after me.

Are these empty threats? The bank said regardless of the merchant's personal policies, if the item isn't as described, I did nothing wrong. I still have the product wrapped and in the shipping box. As far as the seeking damages and what sounds like suing me... can that happen from another country? And I have all the email correspondence, photos and the 'threat' from them today should they actually try something. I guess my question is... what do I do? I'm infuriated over this and want to make sure I'm protected as possible from their craziness.
